Tesco's Obesity to be Exposed on C4

The Supermarket That's Eating Britain.

Monday 19th February 8pm Channel 4 Dispatches

Tesco is Britain's favourite supermarket by far. With 2,000 stores and 15 million customers a week, it's almost twice as big as its nearest rival. But Dispatches shows how Tesco could soon become even bigger, and asks if this retail giant is abusing its power. This film examines the ways in which Tesco avoids paying tens of millions of pounds in tax by exploiting legal loopholes, as well as chronicling the links Tesco has forged with New Labour.

"...Tesco avoids paying tens of millions of pounds in tax by exploiting legal loopholes..."

So, if you owned a business you would make sure you paid as much tax possible; even if you didn't have to! Good business sense!

People are just jealous at the amount of money they make.

tesco should stop trying to dominate the uk i wouldnt mind if they donated a decent amount of profits to charities but they just give pitiful amounts to a select number of charities to retain a good image in the public eye terry leahy is a ghoul

pitiful amounts? they gave over £2 million to their charity of the year for 2006, Whizz Kids. Obviously they can't do this for every charity that exsists, which is why they have a different charity every year! hardly cold-hearted from tesco, is it?

£2 million from £2 billion? Not really that generous, they could easily have doubled it and probably not noticed.

al, the company does have to make money to stay alive....

Well obviously, all I'm saying is that £2 million is such a small percentage of their profits that they could easily afford to double it without causing any financial hardship.

Actually, come to think of it, how much of that £2 million came from staff fundraising events etc. Most of it probably, so they could have matched the dontations at least.

It's a business not a charity.

yes, its only a small slice of the profits, but its still £2million pounds! thats a lot of money! they add 20% of the money raised out of their pockets, and aim to give at least 1% of pre-tax profits to charity every year. all this information is online

i used to work in a tescos store and yes i would agree that a lot of the charity money comes from in store fundraising, for instance they would offer us days where we could wear our normal clothes, and then rip us off £2 each for the priviledge, to goto the charity of the year,if this occurs in every store, lets say 3 times a year (although its usually more than this) and on average there are 50 people working in each store (although there are many more) and there are 500 stores doing this (again, there are many more), then this is £150,000 raised by staff alone. There are also more fundraising ideas in store, and of course my quoted figures are pessimistic examples. Tesco makes me physically sick

Well just wear your uniform next time if it makes you sick/?

Gave two million to whizz kids, my backside I work in the supply chain for tesco and it was us the employees who were basicly press ganged into raising funds for whizz kids.

bloody tossers and wankers.. they are bonkers that needs to be shot not because they are people but because they are people who are greedy and criminals who ripped people's lives.

"and criminals who ripped people's lives."

Any link to evidence of this?

Seems a bit extreme and made up on the spot.

Why not celebrate a British company doing well??! I don't understand this whole hate for Tesco - nothing they do is good enough.
My company have 'dress down days' too - and they charge us £2 for charity. We all join in except for one guy who refuses to dress down and pay. He never comes out on the social events, he never brings treats in for the team (he doesn't moan at taking the ones the rest of us bring in though!)

I hate it when people moan that someone with more money than they do does nothing for charity but then moan when they are asked to donate a whole £2 to charity themselves. Have a word with yourself

I'll say it again - Tesco could give half their profits to charity and you would still moan that they could have given more. What about all those celebrities who have millions? They could give more than they do - go and moan at them!

tell you what i couldnt give a toss that they are a british company, i'm ASHAMED that they are a british company, why don't they follow the example set by many other british companies such as dyson and piss off to china or india or something, close down all UK operations sell the land and donate all profits to charity tesco would not be missed

Tesco hater.....

hmmm 'm sure you're just a bit upset and not hinkin straight about what you've posted as if tesco did as you request then the next one to take tesco's place would be expected to do same until only place you could get food from is abroad or scavanging from the land...and then youd just moan that some farmer was ripping you off over a carrot or potato and want him shot and body parts send abroad.

I can gaurentee Tesco's hater would soon hate some other company if Tesco's did sod off somewhere because he has nothing better to do.

Dear Tesco Hater,
I think you may have some unresolved anger issues. Have you been to see a professional about the problem? If not I would strongly reccomend that you do.

If Tesco did move it's operations to China or India you would just moan that they were making X amount of people redundant. Like I said for some people no matter what Tesco do it's not good enough and never will be. I'm guessing you anger stems from Tesco being such a success and people who resent anothers success usually don't have any themselves.

Yes, that TOTALLY makes sense.

Tesco should go and then after a while Sainsbury's, Asda etc. That would really be helpful.

no my local greengrocer is the best his father was a greengrocer and his father before him tescos move into town offering cheap fruit and veg and other goods under the same roof and naturally his trade weakens. the difference is his money earnt goes back into the local area, not tescoland, and he genuinely cares about his customers, and looks out for them, whereas tescos just want your money in their pocket they infuriate me.

Hi. I've just started working at Tesco recently and was pleasantly suprised at the extent and intelligence of their ethical approach to making money. Please don't forget that that is their purpose. Tesco is run by people like me and you. For the most part we (they) care about our surroundings at the future we will live in together. I could give you some very dull examples of the steps that have been taken to try to prevent the "demon tesco" myth from being a reality but you'd have no reason to believe me.
I share the general concern of this thread that a large competitor like tesco can damage a local retail centre (i.e. a town) but I'd rather it was a company based here that one based in America, with an even more vicious reputation.
(note these are my views and not those of my employers)

You have to remember that not everyone can afford to shop at the local greengrocer or butcher. I know when I was younger my family couldn't. We were a large family and Tesco was a lifesaver - especially as my Mother got her staff discount. The shares that my Mother got also meant that my parents could increase their small deposit for a house and we could move to a slightly better area than the housing association offered. I lived on Tesco value products when I was younger - I repeat we couldn't afford anything more. Thank God for Tesco, I would have starved without it!
